A Luftduph (Lightweight Utility Frame Testbed with Duphilion) is a bipedal robot, designed for exceptional agility. They have a smooth and aerodynamic body, made primarily of silicone skin, synthetic fur, and Duphilion, a carbon fiber composite.

Anatomy

Luftduphs are built on a frame made of Duphilion, a composite material reinforced by carbon fibers, which offers great durability and staggeringly low weight.Five electric fans are used for generating thrust in various directions, and two additional cooling fans on the cheeks discharge heat via the ears. Two compressors, one in each thigh, are used to supply the Luftduph’s pneumatic joints with constant pressure for regular movement, and can alternatively be used to fill two compressed air storage tanks. Stored compressed air can be used at any time to rapidly accelerate a joint, or jet the body in a desired direction.Because of all these motorized and pneumatic devices, a Luftduph can be very loud when using multiple at once, especially if the fans are running at high speed. Ear protection may be necessary for bystanders.A computer system, sensors, microphones, and cameras are stored in the head. They typically have a quad-camera system, with one HD camera and one action camera in each eye. The HD cameras have low framerates and higher resolution for analyzing detail, while the action cameras have high framerates and low resolution for analyzing movement. By interpreting information from both these cameras at once, the Luftduph can analyze the environment in greater detail, and save more footage without sacrificing too much storage. The cameras can be arranged in a heart-shaped pupil, dual pupils, or a large round pupil. Two solid-state drives are kept in the back of their head for a total of 2 terabytes of storage. When the storage is full, old recorded data can be overwritten, or either drive can be taken out and replaced.

Origin

Luftduphs were designed and manufactured by Cloudlace, a company that specializes in material and aerodynamic science, primarily for vehicles. The concept first came to fruition when the Cloudlace design team decided to experiment with a mascot, one that could represent the brand's specialties and broaden their recognition. It combined elements of fast vehicles and animals to create a character that looked agile and friendly.Cloudlace planned the ambitious animatronic mascot design for their next marketing campaign to promote their new composite material, Duphilion. It was an affordable and versatile alternative to many other options on the market, and Cloudlace was confident that it could sell. As the slogan suggested, “Spend on design, save on material.”The company created several functional concept models featuring Duphilion, such as a performance car, bicycles, and various other vehicles and accessories to demonstrate the wide range of applications for the material. These models were then displayed at conventions and trade shows, and alongside them, the Luftduph made its debut as Cloudlace's animatronic mascot. The Luftduph proved to be a successful attention grabber for the company even in crowded venues, not only because of its unusual design, but also its astonishing height of 2.2 meters, allowing it to be seen over crowds. Hundreds of attendees visited the booth just to take photos with it during the events.Despite the concept models being made primarily for demonstration purposes, their spectacular production quality and unique features caught the attention of numerous companies and enthusiasts, who inquired about getting completed versions of their own. The demand was significant enough that some of the models were eventually developed further into complete product lines that could be customized and ordered, with moderate success. To Cloudlace's surprise, there was some interest in purchasing the Luftduph as well, and so the company decided to experiment with turning it into a product of its own. During this process, the design was partially revised, adding new sensors and addressing other hardware flaws of the first model. Furthermore, a more intelligent and configurable software was developed, now capable of advanced speech and situational awareness, no longer limited to scripted or remotely controlled action sequences. After Luftduphs became available for customization and purchase, they have made appearances in various concerts, festivals, stunt shows, and conventions. Some have also been used as simple companions.

Wuffbug

This wiki page is a work in progress and may change at any time. You may create your own Wuffbug for personal non-commercial use.
I will eventually try to create a new reference sheet for them, which will be added here.

Wuffbugs were created by bannhestrids. Credit is appreciated. Thank you.

A Wuffbug is a bipedal SBM (Softbody Machine), designed for high resilience to almost all physical hazards. They have thick and durable skin, dense insulating fur, and a large but efficient digestive system to power their body for long periods of time.

Anatomy

Wuffbugs are created out of a mix of synthetically grown and molded structures, creating an artificial body that is comparable in function to a natural one, but designed to minimize physical weaknesses. The internal anatomy is highly streamlined, while the overall body shape has exaggerated proportions to take advantage of as much space as possible.Instead of typical ears, Wuffbugs have two bulbous round antennae, which are fully enclosed. Despite this, they still provide adequate hearing in all directions.Their pair of large eyes are capable of adjusting to extreme lighting conditions, and can see partially into the infrared spectrum. The eyeballs are enclosed by a transparent layer under the eyelid, preventing any dust or debris from getting into the eye socket. There are four arms and four nimble hands, to allow grabbing and manipulating things in the same way that a human could. In hazardous environments where a human would have to wear protective gloves, the Wuffbug will have a dexterity advantage. The abdomen, a colossal round appendage that hangs over the rear, contains the majority of the digestive system, and is visually similar to that of an ant or spider. It is capable of breaking down most organic matter with minimal waste, or none at all, if their omnivorous diet is maintained properly. Furthermore, its high efficiency allows the Wuffbug to work for a couple of weeks between meals if necessary.Respiration is amphibious, capable of functioning underwater and in open air almost equally. Gasses are exchanged near the surface of the skin at specific porous areas, primarily around the snout and base of the abdomen. If no oxygen is available, a Wuffbug can still hold their breath for up to four hours when fully relaxed. The skeleton, which is partially orange due to its high iron content, serves as a sturdy structure for the body. It is highly resistant to hard impacts, and slightly flexible to prevent fracturing. The skeleton is molded, and used as a frame for the rest of the body to grow on during the creation process. It is first covered by dense layers of muscular and structural tissue, then sealed under thick skin and sometimes a layer of insulating fur.Unlike the rest of the impressive body features, the brain is still a point of struggle for Wuffbugs and many other synthetically-grown Softbody Machines, often requiring long-term guidance or implementation of computer chip assistance to achieve the desired behaviors.

Origin

Wuffbugs were designed and created by Talon Softbody Machines, a company that specializes in replicating natural biology using artificial methods. Their SBMs are considered to be the most advanced in the world, replicating natural biological features, while being immune to common biological hazards, such as viruses, diseases, parasites, and more.Talon aimed to create an SBM that is capable of withstanding some of the harshest environments on Earth, while still having a relatively approachable design. The concept's utility was expected to be niche, but Talon still saw it as an opportunity to create something that no other company was capable of.During the development of this concept, it was initially proposed to be much more human-like. This idea was ultimately scrapped, not only because additional space was necessary to give it the abilities they wanted, but also because the public had grown increasingly distasteful of uncanny machines that tried to look like humans.Getting as much durability as possible required a lot of mass, and to maintain a decent amount of strength and agility, a powerful digestive system had to be included. Better vision required bigger eyes, better hearing required bigger ears, and so on. In the end, a bipedal insect-like design with four nimble hands was considered ideal for most circumstances. Despite the body being large and unwieldy, the hands were unimpeded, and equally as capable as human hands.During trials, the Wuffbug was proven to be capable of many impressive feats:
•Walking across the sea floor by using weighted boots as ballast.
•Navigating hazardous ruins in the dark, such as partially-destroyed buildings.
•Entering simulated burning factories to locate and shut off fuel sources.
•Carrying up to 3 limp dummies, or various heavy packages, along hiking trails.
•Towing small cars across a field.
•Jumping off the top of a 40 meter cherry picker lift, face-down, with no injury.
