Luftduph

This wiki page is a work in progress and may change at any time. You may create your own Luftduph for personal use. Do not plagiarize existing designs.
I will eventually try to create a new reference sheet for them, which will be added here.

Luftduphs were created by bannhestrids. Credit is appreciated. Thank you.

A Luftduph (Lightweight Utility Frame Testbed with Duphilion) is a bipedal robot, designed for exceptional agility. They have a smooth and aerodynamic body, made primarily of silicone skin, synthetic fur, and Duphilion, a carbon fiber composite.

Anatomy

Luftduphs are built on a frame made of Duphilion, a composite material reinforced by carbon fibers, which offers great durability and staggeringly low weight.Five electric fans are used for generating thrust in various directions, and two additional fans on the cheeks discharge heat via the ears. Two compressors, one in each thigh, are used to supply the Luftduph’s pneumatic joints with constant pressure for regular movement, and can alternatively be used to fill two compressed air storage tanks. Stored compressed air can be released at any time to rapidly accelerate a joint, or jet the body in a desired direction.Because of all these motorized and pneumatic devices, a Luftduph can be very loud when using multiple at once. Ear protection may be necessary for bystanders.A computer system, sensors, microphones, and cameras are stored in the head.Luftduphs typically have a quad-camera system, with one HD camera and one action camera in each eye. The HD cameras have low framerates and higher resolution for analyzing detail, while the action cameras have high framerates and low resolution for analyzing movement. By interpreting information from both these cameras at once, the Luftduph can analyze the environment in greater detail, and save more footage without sacrificing too much memory. The cameras can be arranged in a heart-shaped pupil, dual pupils, or a large round pupil. Two solid-state drives are kept in the back of their head for a total of 2 terabytes of storage. When the storage is full, old recorded data can be deleted, or the drives can be taken out and replaced with new ones.

Origin

Luftduphs were designed and manufactured by Cloudlace, a company that specializes in material and aerodynamic science, primarily for vehicles. The Luftduph concept first came to fruition when the Cloudlace design team decided to experiment with a mascot, one that could clearly represent the brand's specialties and broaden their recognition to the public. It combined elements of fast vehicles and animals into an agile and friendly design.Cloudlace planned the ambitious mascot design for their next marketing campaign to promote their new composite material, Duphilion. It was a more affordable and versatile alternative to many other options on the market, and Cloudlace was confident that it could sell. As the slogan suggested, “Spend on design, save on material.”The company created several functional models featuring Duphilion, such as performance cars, a road bicycle, and various other accessories to show the wide range of applications for the material. The models were subsequently displayed at various conventions and trade shows, and alongside them, the Luftduph made its debut as Cloudlace's animatronic mascot. The Luftduph proved to be a successful attention grabber for the company even in crowded venues, not only because of its unusual design, but also its astonishing height of 2.2 meters, allowing it to be seen over crowds.Despite the Cloudlace's designs being made primarily for demonstration purposes, their spectacular production quality and unique appeal caught the attention of some enthusiasts, who inquired about getting fully functional versions of their own. In response to this demand, some of the models were eventually developed further into complete products that could be customized and ordered. In the case of Luftduphs, their design was partially revised, adding new sensors, improving software, and addressing other flaws of the first model. Furthermore, a more responsive and configurable artificial intelligence was developed, now capable of advanced speech and situational awareness, no longer limited to scripted or remotely controlled action sequences. After Luftduphs became available for purchase, they have made appearances in concerts, festivals, stunt shows, and other types of performance acts. Some have also been used as simple companions.
